Lighthouse

On Tuesday, my Granny passed away. Not being able to travel down to Maryland to be there for her funeral has been tough to process but I've been processing a lot through art. This illustration I based off an old picture of hers. I don't know how long she'd actually had it, but I remember for years this picture, done in embroidery hanging on the walls of my grandparent's house. The picture was handed down to me several months back after my Granny had to significantly downsize to move into an assisted living facility and I like to think that she must have found some measure of comfort from the scene to have kept it for as long as she did. "One short sleep past, we wake eternally" and I like to think when she did it was somewhere like this.

Freehand Mandala Gallery

Although I've been drawing mandalas for several years now, more recently I've been doing a lot of freehand mandalas. The results, I think, have ended up looking a lot more organic and definitely feel more spontaneous than ones in the past where I've used a compass and ruler to map out a grid.

Snail White & The Prinsects

Living in SE Asia, it was not uncommon to see all sorts of skin whitening "beauty" products. Subway ads, billboards, and 7-11 displays full of the products themselves all touting themselves as the best for bleaching the color out of your skin. One product, Snail White, which I'm sure is full of only the best snail secretion filtrates, really got me thinking. First I thought something like, "Haha, that kind of sounds like Snow White", and then something more along the lines of "Woah, unrealistic beauty standards are pretty crappy". Thanks to a really great thinktank session with some friends shortly after, I was able to compile a solid list of Princess/Insect puns and from there the Prinsects project was born. I hope you find them even half as amusing as I do!

Word Association Flash

Last year I made an unofficial new years resolution to try and come up with a unique Flash Sheet every week for the year. The idea was to come up with a full page of designs referencing a single word or idea. Although I definitely fell short of the full year mark, I did manage to keep the project alive 20 solid weeks before I got sidetracked and started working on other things instead. I'm really happy with the results and had a lot of fun incorporating more pencil shading into the pieces as I got more into the series.

Beach Ar(d)t

In 2017 I moved up to Manchester by the Sea, MA, home of the beautiful Singing Beach. Thanks to finding a really awesome drawing rock and the fact that the water was paralyzingly freezing, I started drawing designs in the sand. Although I am much better about going in the water now, I still love drawing in the sand whenever I get the chance

Ayutthaya Chedi - Pen & Ink (2015)
After college I spent two years living abroad in Thailand. I continued working on the same pen & ink techniques I focused on through college but also started practicing a lot more with pencil (especially with pencil shading). And, although I continued doing quite a few stand-alone compositions as I was accustomed to from the project/assignment based nature of college, I also started focusing a little more on multi-piece series and concepts.

Rattle Tattoo Flash Studies - 2015

After about a year in Thailand, I got connected with Rattle Tattoo; a small tattoo shop set up at a Bangkok night market. They taught me a little about tattooing and a lot about pencil drawing in exchange for hanging around the shop to help them keep sharp on their conversational English. Nick, Fang, and Beam had me practicing in pencil a majority of the time (most of which would not be worth sharing) but, as you can see, I was still able to spend a good bit of time incorporating my pen & ink hatching style into the flash designs from books and magazines around the shop.
